Passion Hypothesis

(which Newport argues against) The key to occupational happiness is to first figure out what you're passionate about and then find a job that matches this passion.

Passion is Rare

  1. What did the recent graduates learn from the people they interviewed about how to pursue a meaningful career?
    • They learned that people found that trough hard work you come to enjoy your job.
  2. What evidence is there that passion is rare?
    • Many surveies have shown that many passions are more hobbies which are not easily relatable to a job or career
  3. What is the difference between a job, a career, and a calling?
    • Job: way to pay the bills, career: path to better work, calling: something part of your life
  4. What evidence is there that passion takes time?
    • The surveyed assistants showed that they often thought their job more as a calling the longer they had been working at that job.
  5. What are the three elements of self-determination-theory?
    • Autonomy, competence, relatedness
    • How can you work on these three in your work in this class?
      • I can work on the autonomy part by applying myself to the different assignments and chosing how i want to do them. In doing so I will be able to further work on developing competence in what I do and which will hopefully further improve the autonomy part. The relatedness is trying to realize in what ways the content is relating to me.
    • Where do you notice strong evidence of these three in you life?
      • I find that this is clear in what I do for work, i program. Why? Because it is something that ive been doing since the 1st grade and it is something that many people around me continue telling me that im doing a good job at which further enforced my development of this. Which further also developed how I am able to now have some autonomy over what I am able to work on for my projects at work which makes it all the more enjoyable just like the surveyed assistants.

  1. What is the difference between the passion mindset and the craftsman mindset?
    • The between the two mindsets is that one is directed in the self and the other is expecting that you are just reciving some natural capability. further to that point, creative people say that they can not just wait for that shower moment where they get that great idea. They instead need to be able to create many good ideas and then develop them further. The same concept applies here.
  2. What three traits does Newport identify that make great careers so compelling?
    • Creativity
    • Impact
    • Control
  3. What are the three qualities that eliminate a job from a craftsman mindset? How do these qualities connect to Comer's explanation of vocation?
    • if the job does not present opportunities to distinguish yourself by developint skills that are relevant.
    • the job focuses on somethign you think is useless or bad for the world (e.g. oil)
    • The fjob forces you to work with people you really dislike
